Fantasy Genre Essay Fantasy Genre Essay Introduction A fantasy is an original, fictional work in which the author presents the characters and settings in such a manner that it creates an experience that is beyond the ordinary life (Murray, 2004).The most successful fantasy films provide viewers with vicarious experiences that resonate with emotional, if not physical, reality. Both Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings demonstrate the appeal of fantasy as a vehicle for wish fulfillment through their glorification of magical (hence unrealistic) solutions to serious problems.Fantasy films are films that belong to the fantasy genre with fantastic themes, usually magic, supernatural events, mythology, folklore, or exotic fantasy worlds. The genre is considered a form of speculative fiction alongside science fiction films and horror films, although the genres do overlap.
Major movie genres include such types of films as musicals, comedies, action and adventure films, Westerns, crime and detective films, melodramas, science fiction and horror films, gangster films, and war films” (123). During the course of this class we have studied a majority of these genres.Fantasy Films: Unlike science fiction films that base their content upon some degree of scientific truth, take the audience to netherworld, fairy-tale places where events are unlikely to occur in real life. In mythological or legendary times, they transcend the bounds of human possibility and physical laws.
Genre is a very important component of a film, because it defines which direction the plot line will go and allows you to prepare yourself for that film. Even though video stores use about eight to fifteen genres to categorize their films, there are about five main genres that are big and popular.
